This week, meet Samrid Aryal, the student employee who has been with us the longest in our current batch!

SamridWhat do you do in the library? I work at the Information Desk. I help patrons with technical troubleshooting, general questions, and help them with finding research materials/articles.
How long have you worked in the library? About three and a half years
What is your major and year in school? Information Systems major, Senior
What is one thing about the library you think everyone should know? That they can check out board games, video games, projectors, laptops, and other equipment from us.
What is the last good book you read? The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
What was your favorite book as a kid? The Arabian Nights
Tell us a fun fact about you! I am the first international student from Nepal to attend WOU.

Meet your Hamersly staff: Myranda Sawyer

This week, meet Myranda Sawyer, one of our excellent student employees who is leaving us at the end of this term to complete an internship before she graduates in the spring. Thanks for all your hard work, Myranda!

What do you do in the library? I’m an Information Desk student worker
How long have you worked in the library? One and a half years
What is your major and year in school? I’m a Criminal Justice major, and I’m a Senior
What is one thing about the library you think everyone should know? That you can order most of your textbooks from Summit, and the best part is, it’s free! It’s a great way to save a little extra money, sometimes a lot of money depending on the textbook. 🙂 Just ask someone at the Information Desk and we will show you how.
What is the last good book you read? At the risk of sounding like a nerd, the last good book I read was for one of my Criminal Justice classes, and it was called There are no children here by Alex Kotlowitz. It is about a young man growing up in the inner city of Chicago and all of the things he had to go through at such a young age. I highly recommend it!
What was your favorite book as a kid? I had too many favorites when I was a kid. Pretty much any Dr. Seuss book was my favorite.
Tell us a fun fact about you! I used to play three instruments: the saxophone, the tuba, and the bass.

Scott Carter finalist for the Oregon Book Award–again!

Congratulations to Scott Carter! He is a finalist for his 2nd Oregon Book Award for Scott William Carterhis book, Wooden Bones, which was published by Simon & Schuster in 2012.  The nomination is in the Children’s Literature category.  The awards are presented at a March 17th ceremony.
By day, Scott is the Information Technologist in Hamersly Library’s Technology Resource Center.  Come twilight and 5 p.m. Fridays, he turns into Scott William Carter.

In 2011, Scott won for The Last Great Getaway of the Water Balloon Boys, also published by Simon and Schuster. That award was in the Young Adult Literature category.

Requesting Summit items scheduled unavailability

The system that allows requesting of Summit materials is undergoing an upgrade during the overnight hours of April 30-May 1. It’s scheduled to be down from 11 p.m. to 11 a.m. at the latest. You will still be able to search and view the Summit catalog (as well as our own local library catalog), and you can request materials via Interlibrary Loan (ILL). Once the system is back up, library staff will reroute to the Summit system any ILL requests that can be filled more quickly and cheaply through our regional partner libraries.

This downtime will not affect delivery of any requests that are already in the system.

Biography Reference Center

Biography Reference CenterBiography Reference Center serves up detailed and concise biographies, in full-text, from respected reference sources and magazine articles. In addition to searching by name for a known individual, you can discover notable people by searching fields or browsing categories. Search fields include profession or activity, nationality or U.S. ethnicity, gender, lifespan, and places of birth and death.  Over 30 genre categories cluster together people who have commonalities even when their professions diverge: for example, Activists & Reformers, Business Leaders, Obama Administration, or World War II.

Educational Content, Curricula, and Standards

Kraus Curriculum Development Library
Kraus Curriculum Development Library is a database of educational materials from course content (lesson plans, learning activities) to teacher and administrator strategies, from educational legislation to academic standards by subject and grade level.  The materials come from state departments of education and other government agencies,  as well as local school districts, professional associations, non-profit organizations, and other sources that have educational concerns. Documents published after 2000 are available on the site as PDFs and/or HTML files.

Bloggin’ at the library

Hey all,
We now have a library blog! As of this evening, the librarians are all authors. No one else has been added yet, becuase, well, I was working the desk and this system’s a little s-l-o-w. A little later I’ll show each of the librarians how to add authors so that my fingers don’t fall off 🙂
